Washington, DC
– In response to the Republican Platform of 2016 adopted at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, William R. Dougan, National President of the National Federation of Federal Employees, America’s first federal employee union, issued the following statement:

"We get nowhere as a country when one political party seeks to take away hard-earned pay and benefits from this nation’s civil servants. At a time when federal employees make 35 percent less than comparable private sector workers, the GOP demands further cuts in salaries and benefits of our VA nurses and doctors, wildland firefighters and the men and women maintaining the readiness of America’s military. The GOP’s divisive language comes at a time when the federal government is struggling to recruit and retain the next generation of government leaders. Make no mistake, the federal government’s ongoing struggle to recruit highly-qualified applicants to mission-critical positions is fueled in part by the downright hateful anti-government rhetoric of the GOP. The GOP platform is cause for great concern about what the future of critical government services would look like in a Donald Trump Administration."

"Of further concern are the repeated attacks the GOP aims at the VA nurses and doctors providing needed care to our Nation’s veterans. Despite mounting evidence that America’s veterans prefer the quality care they receive at VA facilities, the GOP is hell-bent on destroying the VA as we know it, cutting it up and selling off services to the lowest bidder. Our veterans deserve better. What our veterans need from Congress and a President are the resources necessary to meet the demands of the increasingly complex set of emotional and physical ailments veterans face. Yet the GOP seeks precisely the opposite, seeking to privatize care and removing dedicated VA caregivers in favor of political cronies. The GOP platform is wrong for federal employees, wrong for veterans and wrong for America."
