Washington, DC
– With the Democratic National Convention underway in Philadelphia, Penn., William R. Dougan, National President of the National Federation of Federal Employees, America’s first federal employee union, issued the following statement on the 2016 Democratic Platform:

"While certainly better than the destructive GOP Platform adopted at last week's Republican National Convention, the 2016 Democratic Platform does little in the way for federal employees. It is discouraging that a platform repeatedly referencing federal resources and programs fails to mention supporting the workforce tasked with administering those programs. At a time when federal employees are under constant attack from a hostile Congress, we need real allies ready to stand with us in our fight. We need solutions to close the 35 percent pay gap between federal employees and private sector workers. We need progress on ending the senseless sequestration cuts that has placed a significant burden on federal agencies carrying out the business of the American people. Unfortunately, the 2016 Democratic Platform largely misses the mark federal employees need."

"Over the last six years, through pay freezes, small raises and increased worker contributions to retirement benefits, federal employees have sacrificed what will amount to $182 billion in compensation over ten years; a number that will continue to grow because the cuts were made permanent. This is a trend that needs to be reversed. While we are encouraged to see federal employee-advocate Sen. Tim Kaine as the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, the 2016 Democratic Platform fails to advocate for the federal workforce. However, we remain hopeful that a Clinton presidency would recognize the importance of America’s civil servants and work to undue the steep cuts and sacrifices federal employees have made in recent years."
