Washington, D.C. – Today, on the 28th day of the government shutdown, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM) is calling on Congress to return to Washington and do their jobs.

“The government has been shut down for four full weeks – enough with the lame excuses,” said NFFE National President Randy Erwin. “Speaker Johnson must call Congress back into session and negotiate an end to this government shutdown immediately.

“With each passing day of this government shutdown, the pain being felt by federal employees, their families, and their communities is growing. These are middle-class workers who cannot afford to go weeks on end without a paycheck. Many of them literally cannot afford to put gas in the car or food on the table. How out of touch is our Congressional leadership?

“The impact of this prolonged government shutdown extends far beyond federal workers. Millions of Americans are suffering through lost economic productivity, halted food assistance, and the suspension of vital programs that keep our country running.

“Due to Speaker Johnson’s outright refusal to negotiate with the minority party, we are no closer to an end to this government shutdown on Day 28 than we were on Day 1. The Speaker seriously sounds like a broken record, repeating the same empty talking points day after day while doing absolutely nothing resolve this crisis.

“Enough of the partisan gamesmanship. Federal workers and the American people deserve better than this.”
