National Federation of Federal Employees Local 1431, representing medical professionals at the East Orange VA Hospital are on the front lines of the COVID-19 outbreak in East Orange, New Jersey. While they remain steadfast in their commitment to caring for our nation’s sick and wounded veterans, especially during this time of crisis, many are concerned for their own health.

“This legislation creates a new grant program that would result in a costly and dangerous use of tax dollars to private entities without any necessary requirements or oversight of the care provided,” said Randy Erwin, NFFE National President.

Today, Randy Erwin, National President of the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) sent a letter to President Trump demanding that the Administration provide federal employees with the tools they need to win the war against COVID-19. The letter is in reply to the lackluster response by the Administration to adequately protect federal civil servants during the pandemic thus far

“Employees of the U.S. Forest Service are furious that USDA will not give an inch on administrative leave for employees that in many cases need time to care for loved ones like children and elderly during the COVID-19 crisis,” said Melissa Baumann, chair of the NFFE Forest Service Council.

The VA is required by law to provide a safe work environment for all employees – including providing personnel with the personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary to protect themselves while caring for veterans and others. While VA leadership claims that all employees have adequate PPE and staffing levels are safe, reports from across the country articulate to the contrary.

While they remain steadfast in their commitment to caring for our nation’s sick and wounded veterans, many are concerned for their own health and are fearful that their ability to continue offering care will be compromised.
