The National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) is pleased to announce that Emily Wichtrich was awarded the Richard N. Brown Memorial Scholarship for the 2017 year. Emily is the daughter of NFFE member Susan Sova, a federal employee with the U.S. Forest Service.
The scholarship is an annual award of $2,000, jointly funded by NFFE and the Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA). FEEA is an independent, nonpro?t organization devoted to providing emergency ?nancial assistance and scholarships to federal employees and their families. (https://feea.org)
NFFE and FEEA first teamed up in 2010 to dedicate a scholarship in the memory past national president Richard N. Brown. President Brown dedicated his life to enhancing the prosperity and job security of federal employees and their families. This scholarship is intended to ensure that his legacy of selfless stewardship on behalf of federal workers will live on for years to come.
Dave Stamey, NFEE National Secretary-Treasurer and FEEA board member, said that this scholarship program continues to honor and uphold President Brown’s legacy by providing federal employees and their dependents with educational opportunities through a scholarship.
“The Richard N. Brown Memorial Scholarship is one of the best ways to celebrate Rick’s life and work,” Stamey said after the award was announced, “and it is one of the most important benefits NFFE offers to its membership. We are very pleased to offer this year’s scholarship to Emily, an outstanding student with a very bright future, and a young leader who exemplifies the best attributes of the NFFE family.”
Emily plans to attend the University of San Francisco where she hopes to pursue a double major of Political Science and Fine Arts. She has aspirations of one day working as a Civil Rights Attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, specializing in either immigration law or women’s rights.
To qualify for the scholarship, one must be either a child or spouse of a full or part-time permanent federal civilian or postal worker employed with the federal government for more than three years, or an employee themselves. The federal worker must also be a NFFE member or a dependent of a NFFE member in good standing. In addition, one must have a GPA of 3.0 and must be involved in some type of community service. Dependent applicants should be full-time students, while employee applicants may be part-time students. All applicants must be accepted into an accredited degree program.
