The following is a letter that NFFE National President Randy Erwin released today to keep NFFE-IAM members informed on the current status of the 51st NFFE National Convention currently scheduled to take place October 5-8, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas.
Dear NFFE-IAM Members:
I am writing today to keep you informed on the current status of the 51st NFFE National Convention currently scheduled to take place October 5-8, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas.
We do important business at Convention, including electing our officers and amending our Bylaws. However, the health and safety of delegates is our top priority, and the COVID-19 pandemic is currently far from under control. We must plan for carrying out the business of Convention in the event that traveling and meeting in a large group would put the health and lives of delegates and their families at unacceptable risk.
To address this matter, a special National Executive Council (NEC) phone meeting was convened last week. While no final decisions were made, it was the sense of the NEC that it is possible that the in-person Convention will have to be canceled and the business of Convention performed virtually. Various options for how to make this work were discussed, with the focus being on compliance with the spirit of NFFE’s Bylaws, the IAM Constitution, and Department of Labor regulations. In particular, the NEC is committed to upholding democratic principles.
The NEC is very aware that these decisions must be made expeditiously so that NFFE Locals will know what to expect regarding Convention and can plan accordingly. Another special NEC meeting is scheduled for May 18, 2020 to address the situation. I will keep you informed of any decisions that are made on this important matter.
Thank you for all you do. Be safe!
Fraternally,
Randy L. Erwin
