Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Today, we commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We honor an American hero whose unwavering advocacy for civil rights and social justice was inextricably linked with the labor movement – a mission that as a union family we carry forward every day.
As a labor union, it is our responsibility to confront injustice and fight for dignity and respect for every American. The rights Dr. King fought for cannot be taken for granted. We must remain vigilant in protecting our rights and freedoms, both in our workplaces and our communities.
When those rights are threatened, we must follow Dr. King’s example by engaging in nonviolent protest and collective action. We must stand up for our neighbors and coworkers who face discrimination and persecution, and we must live our values by standing in solidarity with one another.
It is also imperative that we support elected officials and candidates who are committed to advancing civil rights and protecting workers. I encourage you to stay informed and engaged on policies and legislation affecting voting rights, civil rights, and workers’ rights, and to urge your representatives at the local, state, and federal levels to support efforts that strengthen and expand these protections.
NFFE remains committed to promoting justice not only in the workplace, but throughout our communities nationwide. As Dr. King demonstrated through his leadership in the civil rights movement, our true power is only achieved through unity and solidarity. Only by standing together can we build a stronger nation grounded in democracy, freedom, and equality for all.
