Washington, D.C. – Today, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM) is proud to announce the U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 2550, the Protect America’s Workforce Act (PAWA), bipartisan legislation that would restore collective bargaining rights for federal workers targeted by an executive order that unilaterally denied one million civil servants of their union rights on the basis of national security.
“This is an incredible testament to the strength of federal employees and the longstanding support for their fundamental right to organize and join a union,” said NFFE National President Randy Erwin. “The President cannot unilaterally strip working people of their constitutional freedom of association. In bipartisan fashion, Congress has asserted their authority to hold the President accountable for the biggest attack on workers that this country has ever seen.”
After garnering co-sponsorship from a majority of the House of Representatives, Speaker Johnson refused to bring PAWA to the House floor, despite overwhelming support. In response, a discharge petition was advanced to force a vote on the legislation. After 218 members signed the petition, PAWA was brought to the floor for a vote today, where it passed. The bill will now head to the Senate for consideration.
“Thank you to Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) for his leadership on this issue and to every House member who cosponsored this critical legislation, especially the principled Republicans who stood with working people in opposition to the President,” continued Erwin. “I look forward to working with Senators from both parties to ensure this bill is signed into law and union rights are restored for over one million federal employees.”
