Today, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passing H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act. In a 327-75 vote, the House passed the legislation, originally cosponsored by Reps. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) and Garret Graves (R-Pa.), which aims to repeal the Social Security Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset (WEP/GPO).

“The WEP and GPO are nonsensical provisions within Social Security law that have punished public servants for almost four decades,” said NFFE National President Randy Erwin. “Federal workers, teachers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and many more government employees deserve the retirement security they have earned working those critical jobs.”

The House convened earlier this week to vote on the bill, passing it with a rare bipartisan supermajority. Over 60 Senators have already signed on to support the legislation, signaling a bipartisan filibuster-proof majority should the bill be scheduled for a vote on the Senate floor. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will need to put the bill on the calendar before the 118th Congressional session ends on January 3rd.

“Thank you to Representatives Spanberger and Graves for their leadership in forcing a House vote on this bill,” continued Erwin. “NFFE has fought for the WEP and GPO to be eliminated for decades, and now is the time to get it done. Majority Leader Schumer must let the Senate vote on this legislation before it is too late.”
