This week, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM) met with 25 members of Congress of the House Labor Caucus to discuss the potential impacts of “Schedule F” and the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). NFFE Executive Director Steve Lenkart and other leaders from labor unions representing federal employees briefed the group on planned attacks against the professional civil service in 2025 and beyond.

NFFE reported to Congress on the dangers of Schedule F, which allows the President to appoint an unlimited number of permanent political loyalists within the Executive Branch who are not subject to oversight, discipline, or performance evaluations by professional employees. Schedule F also enables the President to reclassify nonpartisan professional employees, strip away civil service protections against unethical or illegal activity, and terminate them summarily.

“Schedule F opens the floodgates for massive, unchecked political corruption,” said Executive Director Lenkart. “Billions in taxpayer funds would be squandered on unjustified salaries and benefits for political appointees willing to do the President’s bidding in dismantling the professional civil service.”  NFFE and the Machinists Union continue to push for legislation to outlaw Schedule F, which is currently pending on Capitol Hill, albeit facing an uphill battle to get passed.
