The National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) is deeply saddened by the loss of Nicholas “Nic” Crews, a Social Work Case Manager at the Pickens County VA Clinic in Jasper, Georgia. Nic was tragically shot by a patient last week while conducting a mental health evaluation and passed away on Wednesday, March 18.
Born in Atlanta, Nic attended Kennesaw State University and the University of Tennessee, where he earned a Master’s degree in Social Work. Nic was called to served at the Department of Veterans Affairs, passionately helping veterans navigate mental health challenges. On his work with his VA patients, Nic said, “My heart just burns with compassion for these guys.”
Nic is survived by his wife Alyssa Crews, his children Cillian, Blair, and Delaney, his mother Kim Morris, and step-father Ricky Morris, his father, Christopher Crews, his step-mother Kimberly Crews, his siblings Benjamin Crews, Lexy Crews, and Lauren Crews, and his step-siblings Ashley Gooch and Jake Morris.
“NFFE extends our deepest condolences to Nic’s family, coworkers, and all of the people he impacted throughout his life,” said NFFE National President Randy Erwin. “This heartbreaking tragedy reminds us that veterans across the country are facing mental health challenges and that compassionate, caring folks like Nic are critical to the Department of Veterans Affairs. May Nic rest in peace and may his legacy of caring for others be carried on.”
