Last week on Friday, in response to the Trump Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Doug Collins terminating collective bargaining agreements for thousands of VA employees, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM) hosted rallies from coast to coast as part of a National Day of Action.

The campaign, titled “Stand for Veterans, Stand for Unions,” saw members from several federal unions and community supporters of VA employees turn out in droves across dozens of cities throughout the country to rally against the illegal union busting implemented by VA Secretary Collins.

NFFE hosted two rallies – one in San Francisco, California alongside NFFE Local 1, as well as another in East Orange, New Jersey with NFFE Local 1431. NFFE National President Randy Erwin spoke in San Francisco.

“Do not think for one second that taking away the rights of VA workers – as this president has done – is good for our veterans,” said Erwin. “Veterans do deserve better from the VA, but the problem is not the inability to discipline VA workers as the President has tried to assert. The problem is that the VA, like many other places across the government, has been turned into a toxic work environment by this President.”

“Now the President is taking away the rights of VA workers by tearing up collective bargaining agreements and attempting to make VA workers at-will employees,” continued Erwin. “Making VA workers feel threatened does not help our veterans. The harmful actions of the President aren’t just terrible for veterans and those that care for them – they are unconstitutional.”
