Yesterday, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM) met face to face with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and the Congressional Labor Caucus at the U.S. Capitol to discuss the ongoing government shutdown. The meeting was also attended by the presidents of allied federal unions, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), and the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE).
“It was incredibly important to have a seat at the table with Leader Jeffries to explain how dire this shutdown is for NFFE-IAM members and federal employees across the country,” said NFFE National President Randy Erwin. “Our top priority is a quick end to this shutdown and it is critical that leaders in Congress understand that this shutdown is not only unnecessary, but a serious threat to the wellbeing of our members, many of whom who are living paycheck to paycheck.”
President Erwin explained how many NFFE-IAM members live in rural areas and cannot even afford to put gas in their cars to commute to work, while others face mounting hardships as they try to provide for themselves and their families. Erwin also discussed the damage this shutdown has already done and will continue to do to the services the American people rely on every day.
“Federal workers are sick and tired of being used as political pawns in this reckless power struggle on Capitol Hill,” continued Erwin. “Government shutdowns do nothing but harm hardworking Americans and disrupt the critical missions they carry out each day on behalf of their fellow Americans. Shutdowns should never be used as political tools. Something has to give. Leaders on both sides of the aisle must come together, compromise, and do their jobs to fund the government.”
