Organizing Tip of the Week: Use Sign-in Sheets in Your Union Office and at Union Events
One extremely valuable, but often overlooked, tool that every NFFE Local can utilize is the sign-in sheet. Sign-in sheets should be kept near the entrance to your union office, and also be brought to every union-sponsored event. These sheets will provide you with an important record of the potential members that have shown an interest in your Local.
In order to make the best use of your sign-in sheets, it is important to ask for contact information from your signers. Decide what information would be most valuable to collect, such as a phone number, email address, building number, and so on, and include space for those items on your sheet.
During events where you expect a heavy attendance, make sure that people will have to pass the sign-in sheet on their way in. If at all possible, make a Local officer or member responsible for greeting your guests, and asking them to fill out the sign-in sheet. If you don’t ask, people will pass it by.
Most importantly, follow up with the potential members that have signed your sheet! These are co-workers that have already shown some interest in the union, and people you have contact information for. You never know who might be sitting on the fence, and would sign an 1187 if a member of the Local followed up with them.
Sign-in sheets are easy to implement, and have the potential to be very useful. If you aren’t already using them at your Local, we encourage you to start today!
