Employees at Red River Army Depot (RRAD) received welcome news recently as the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) Local 2189 announced that all term-appointed workers will have their positions extended through September 19, 2026.

NFFE Local 289 President Randy Kirchstein announced the good news in a Facebook post earlier this month and continues to be grateful and optimistic about the term renewal. He said that through “public advocacy and getting our elected officials involved” they were able to “shine a spotlight on the Red River.”

“We are a viable asset to the army’s capabilities as well as the lifeblood of the community around here with what we provide in economic value.”

Kirchstein described this term renewal as “extremely impactful to the employees.”

“To know that their families can rest easy at night knowing that for at least the next 12 months their jobs are secure at the depot is huge,” he said.

The decision ensures job stability for a large segment of the depot’s workforce, many of whom were facing uncertainty as their term appointments neared expiration. According to NFFE 2189, the extension preserves the experience, skills and earned expertise and knowledge that are vital to RRAD’s mission supporting the U.S. Army and the nation’s defense readiness.

Kirchstein also attributed having a “great relationship” with management to this win for employees.

“This is very much a local and a management team effort,” NFFE National Business Representative and Organizer Chris Green said.

Union leaders stressed that the extension demonstrates both the value of the workforce and the importance of continued investment in the depot. By retaining experienced employees, RRAD can avoid costly gaps in training and productivity while ensuring that critical military assets remain combat-ready.

This extension also makes way for less employment turnover which will ensure higher quality work, productivity and a welcomed sense of job security for hard working employees.

NFFE 2189 emphasized that securing this extension was a priority for the union and reflects the strength of solidarity among members. “When we stand together, we win results that matter,” the union noted. “This is a victory not just for our term employees, but for the entire depot community.”

As the new extension carries term employees through late 2026, NFFE 2189 will continue to fight for long-term workforce stability and security at RRAD in a way that prioritizes the people behind the hard work.

Last year, a mass hiring event open exclusively to Red River Army Depot workers allowed some of the term employees to convert to permanent employees which positively impacted the depot as these hires came with decades of experience and knowledge under their belts.

“We’re hoping that moving forward, in approximately a year’s time, that there will be another opportunity to convert some of these term employees to permanent employees,” Kirchstein said.
