Washington, D.C. – Today, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM) joined fellow labor unions, the Federal Unionists Network, elected officials, and community organizers for a rally outside the U.S. Capitol in support of the Protect America’s Workforce Act (PAWA).
The bipartisan legislation aims to reverse the Trump Executive Order stripping union rights from civil servants on the basis of national security, and would restore collective bargaining rights for over one million federal workers. PAWA was passed by the House of Representatives in December after a successful discharge petition advanced the bill to the House Floor after Speaker Johnson refused to consider the bill for a vote.
“The right to bargain is protected by the First Amendment,” said NFFE National President Randy Erwin. “Our Constitution guarantees us those rights. Generations of Americans have shed blood defending those rights. Nobody – not even the President of the United States – gets to take those rights away, unilaterally, with the stroke of a pen. No matter what side of the aisle you are on, you must acknowledge that giving one person the power to strip away our Constitutional rights is both scary and dangerous.”
“The American people are counting on their Senators and Representatives to protect them from unlawful infringements on their Constitutional rights,” continued Erwin. “Supporting this legislation is not just defending the right to collectively bargain, it is taking an honest stand for all of the American people’s Constitutional rights, which are under threat if rights like the freedom to unionize can be taken away. The Senate must do their jobs and pass the Protect America’s Workforce Act.”
