Washington, D.C. – Today, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) urges members of the U.S. House of Representatives to sign the discharge petition that would force a floor vote on the Social Security Fairness Act, H.R. 82. The bill would eliminate Social Security’s Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO).

“The WEP and GPO are significant provisions in the law that rob government employees of their well-deserved retirement security, including teachers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, federal workers, and more, whose work was not covered by Social Security,” said NFFE National President Randy Erwin. “Over 300 House members agree. With a small window left in the legislative calendar, now is the time to bring the Social Security Fairness Act to the House floor.”

The discharge petition filed on Tuesday needs signatures from at least 218 members of the House in order for H.R. 82 to be scheduled for a floor vote. The WEP and GPO affect millions of retired public servants across the country, harming the retirement security of government workers for nearly 40 years.

“For decades, NFFE has advocated for the elimination of the WEP and GPO,” continued Erwin. “With overwhelming bipartisan support, Congress must take this opportunity to do right by our public servants. Government workers should not be unfairly punished for dedicating their careers to providing necessary services to their country and their communities.”
