Continuing with our mission of improving the lives of NFFE-IAM members and their families across the country, NFFE is proud to announce the winners of this year’s Richard N. Brown Memorial Scholarship.
NFFE teamed up with the Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA), a non-profit organization founded to provide financial assistance to federal employees and their families, to dedicate a scholarship in the name of late NFFE National President, Richard N. Brown. This scholarship is intended to ensure that Rick’s legacy of selfless stewardship of federal workers will live on for years to come.
This year’s winners are Mason Carter, son of Germaine Carter, member of NFFE Local 1904 in New Orleans, LA, and Mikayla Ries, daughter of Sharon Ries, member of NFFE Local 225 in Fargo, ND.
Next fall, Mason will be studying biology on a pre-medicine track at Xavier University. Mason said, “Five years from now, I envision myself completing my first year of medical school moving towards my goal of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon for children. As I advance through medical school, I plan to learn all that is required to prepare me to include viewing as well as taking part in surgeries. Through my work as a surgeon, I hope to benefit my community, society, and the world by saving lives.”
Mikayla will be studying nursing at the University of Mary in the fall. When asked what her five-year plan is, Mikayla said, “Volunteering at the VA evoked a greater sense of service within me. Working alongside nurses drew me towards their field, where my compassion could be best used to benefit others. Having military and veteran aspects of my family, I aspire to give back to them as a nurse at a VA hospital. Servicemen and women, often overlooked, fought to protect our country’s freedoms and liberties; I hope to protect and comfort them during their tribulations.”
“NFFE values our hardworking members and the contributions they make to America every day,” stated NFFE National Secretary-Treasurer Dave Stamey. “Its an honor to continue to support hardworking Americans and help the children of NFFE member achieve their goals.”
NFFE President Randy Erwin said, “We here at NFFE are so proud of Mason and Mikayla. This scholarship is a way for us to celebrate our members and the accomplishments of their families.”
