Election Day is less than a week away. With so many key issues on the ballot this year, it is important that NFFE-IAM Members have a plan to make their voices heard at the polls. We encourage you to elect pro-worker candidates into office to ensure organized labor and the working class have an opportunity to thrive in the coming years.
Our priorities on Election Day this year include strengthening the economy with good union jobs, protecting the right to vote and the freedom to join a union, enhancing health care coverage for workers, and safeguarding pensions and retirements for government employees.
With pro-labor leaders in the White House and within agency management, NFFE successfully negotiated for the right of federal employees to using administrative leave time to vote. Here are some important details:
- Administrative Leave for Voting
- All federal employees are eligible to use administrative leave for voting purposes as long as they have approval from their supervisor.
- You may use up to 4 hours of administrative leave per any one election.
- You are eligible to use administrative leave to vote early.
- If it takes less than 4 hours, you may only use the time that you need to vote.
- You may include travel time to and from your polling location.
- Administrative Leave for Serving as a Nonpartisan Poll Worker or Nonpartisan Observer
- Per year, you may use up to 4 hours of administrative leave to serve as a nonpartisan poll worker or to participate in a nonpartisan observer activity.
- Administrative leave for working or observing the polls is in addition to the administrative leave you may use to vote.
- The 4 hours available includes any training hours that you need.
- How to Use It
- Make a plan to vote early or on Election Day.
- Request approval for administrative leave for voting from your supervisor and find out how they want you to code it.
- Request denied? Contact your local steward immediately for assistance.
- NFFE is Here to Help
- If you run into any issues, be sure your supervisor and agency management are aware of the White House Executive Order on Access to Voting, and related OPM Guidance which outlines the above policies.
- Email the NFFE Legal Team for further guidance: jfriday@nffe.org and ypiacsek@nffe.org
- Use the AFL-CIO Voting Guide and Endorsements Page to make your plan to vote today!
